Romance scams
In a romance scam, the fraudster builds a trusting relationship on a dating site or in social media and then asks for money. In 2024, about 460 reports of love and document fraud were filed with the Finnish police, and a total of about 7.2 million euros was lost in them.
How a romance scam unfolds
The scammer builds an emotional bond without hurrying and soon moves the conversation away from the original platform.
- The new acquaintance professes feelings quickly but avoids meeting and video calls.
- At some point "unexpected misfortunes" arise, because of which money is requested.
- Money or gift cards are often requested under the guise of an urgent crisis.
- The story often involves working or travelling abroad.
How to recognise a romance scam
- The person refuses to meet or appear on a video call.
- The conversation is quickly moved to private messages.
- Requests for money, gift cards or "help" begin.
- The profile photos are too professional or can be found elsewhere with a reverse image search.
How to protect yourself
An outsider often spots the scam more easily than the person involved.
- Never send money or gift cards to a person you have not met.
- Do a reverse image search on the profile photo to check that it is genuine.
- Talk about your suspicions with someone close to you.
- Cut off contact immediately if money starts being requested.
What to do if you suspect or fall victim to a scam
- Contact your bank immediately if you gave out your payment or bank details or lost money. Acting quickly may stop the payment.
- File a police report at poliisi.fi if you have lost money.
- Report suspicious messages, calls or websites to the National Cyber Security Centre Finland.
